Update Feb 05

1. The first NRCan-ESS/POLARIS FedNor proposal was submitted and funded in 2003. Second and third, similar projects were funded by FedNor in 2004 and 2005. As a result, an array of 19 Broadband VSAT Seismographs were created, specifically for research in N Ontario. Check here for more details.

2. Current POLARIS research in N Ontario can be categorized in two groups. First, seismicity and seismic risk, including mine safety. Second, teleseismic research with aim to understand the structure of the Lithosphere.

3. Earthquakes Canada group has, recently presented research on James Bay Seismicity to the SSA meeting. Janet Drysdale will present briefing on this work, and in general, in role of POLARIS FedNor stations in seismicity and seismic risk. A Power Point file on this work can be downloaded here (large file, 22 MB!).

4. Fiona Darbyshire has worked exclusively on POLARIS FedNor data for the past two years and has produced a quick Power Point presentation on teleseismic methods intended for FedNor research and has presented a Poster on her FedNor research work at a POLARIS Workshop in Kingston in January 2005.

5. Andrew Frederiksen is currently working of POLARIS FedNor data and has presented his research at the recent POLARIS Workshop in Kingston. A summary of this work can be viewed in this Power Point presentation.

6. A key document (pdf) on the role of POLARIS in diamond exploration research can be downloaded here. In a nutshell, POLARIS continues to look for key differences in deep structure immediately adjacent to a diamond mine (such as Ekati) and some distances from the mine. Encouraged by the findings so far, POLARIS research has extended into N Ontario, working on deep structure immediately adjacent to Victor diamond mine and other N Ontario locations.
